The Declaration of Interdependence is the founding creed of the B Corporation movement — a short statement signed by every company at certification, first signed by the 81 founding B Corps in 2007. Its title is the thesis: where a declaration of independence asserts a right to stand apart, this one asserts that businesses stand answerable to one another, to the people and places they touch, and to future generations. B Lab publishes the text at the source URL and includes it on every B Corp certificate; this entry describes what it holds in the registry's own words.
The Declaration opens with an economic vision: a global economy that uses business as a force for good, populated by a new type of corporation — purpose-driven, creating benefit for all stakeholders rather than shareholders alone.
Its signatories then profess a small set of beliefs. That change begins with themselves: they must be the change they seek in the world. That commerce has a moral setting: all business ought to be conducted as if people and place mattered. That the whole of a business carries its ethics — through products, practices, and profits, a business should aspire to do no harm and to benefit all. And, in the closing move that gives the document its name, that acting this way requires understanding that each is dependent upon another, and thus responsible — for each other, and for future generations.
The Declaration is one layer of a deliberately layered structure: beneath the brief creed sit B Lab's assessment standards, legal-accountability requirements (including benefit-corporation statutes the movement helped pass), and verification. The creed states the conviction; the standards operationalize it; certification audits it. Registries and citers should treat this entry as the creed layer only.
